Newark Food Closet needs donations, volunteers

Increased usage, driven by the changing economic situation in Newark and Arcadia, has presented a challenge for the Newark Food Closet.

Wanda Minnick, aided by her husband Mike, has tackled the job of Food Closet Coordinator and is busy lining up volunteers to handle several tasks.

The Minnicks moved to Newark in 1999. They are members of First United Methodist Church and agreed to be coordinators for the Food Closet.

Wanda Minnick gives credit to Jim and Rita McHale for the excellent condition that the food closet operation is in. The McHales continue to help and are members of the Together in Christ committee which oversees this program.

Minnick acknowledges the work Kaye McCormack does as Food Closet Manager. Minnick said that there are 40 volunteers who distribute food throughout the month. In addition, eight volunteers sort the incoming food and stock the shelves each month. McCormack shops weekly for the closet, and purchases the additional food needed with monetary donations received throughout the year.

Food drives are a major source of the needed inventory. The Post Office, Newark Rotary Club, Boy Scouts, school classrooms, church youth groups and many others work to gather the needed items. During 2002, 1317 households were served, with 1929 bags of food distributed through this Food Closet.

Additional volunteers are needed: Six people are needed to work at the closet as distributors. Four people are needed to sort incoming food and stock the closet.

The Closet is located in the basement of the Municipal Building on East Miller Street. The Newark Food Closet in sponsored by Together In Christ (TIC) and various Newark churches.
