Literacy Volunteers offer training Are you looking for a way to make your life more meaningful and improve your community at the same time? Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County has an answer. According to the National Council on Literacy, over 40 percent of residents in Wayne County have serious deficiencies in their ability to read and write. Some of these people seek help, which you can provide through Literacy Volunteers. LV Wayne County's purpose is to provide that assistance through free reading and writing tutoring. This instruction is provided by trained volunteer tutors who share their time, energy, and appreciation for the written word. Individuals seek help because of various needs, from beginning reading lessons to GED and English as a Second Language instruction. Tutoring usually happens on a weekly basis and is one-on-one. LV Wayne offers a training program for new tutors in January, beginning Saturday, Jan. 18, and on the following Saturdays of January 25 and February 1. The program runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a lunch break and will be held at the Family Education Center at 28 Canal Street in Lyons. Boyd Kimball is the Basic Literacy Coordinator. For more information on becoming a certified LV Tutor, call 946.5333.
