Missing Sodus

Well, we got rid of some of the snow didn't we, fun to think about spring, even though we did get a bunch more. Sometimes thinking about and writing down some notes about what you want to do with your gardens makes the time go a little faster. Also you'll be ready when spring actually comes.

pretty flowers Ralph Everdyke sent me info about how they spent New Year's Eve. He and Betty had a different type of New Year's Eve party. He thought the theme could have been 'Growing Old is Not for Sissies.' One of the ladies in their complex (Peggy Flaherty) celebrated her 90th birthday on Dec. 31st. Her family had a party in the Club House for her, and he and Betty were invited to attend. There were about 50 people there and it was quite an occasion. The Family had provided food and liquid refreshments and a good time was had by all. They had a champagne toast at 10 p.m. because in this age group a lot of the people (including themselves) did not stay up until midnight to cheer in the New Year. He said he was glad they didn't have to travel that night because it rained very hard and driving would have been hazardous. They got about 1.7 inches of rain here and in some of the area they received as much as five or six inches.

So on New Year's Day they took a drive through the countryside to see the water. They ended up at Winter Haven at one of their friends' homes, and when they got there about 2 p.m., they still had water on their streets.

We enjoyed our New Year's Eve as well we spent hours watching movies and snacking till the ball fell on TV. Fun to see how differently every spends the big night.

Helen Carpenter from the Sodus library retired Dec. 31 after 19 years. The library had a punch-and-cookie open house for her last Friday to say goodbye. Of course they all will miss her but know she and her husband Carp will enjoy their new leisure time together.

Also, the library has quite a nice collection of DVD's started. New titles include Minority Report, Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, M*A*S*H the movie, plus the entire first and second seasons of the TV show, In the Bedroom, Gosford Park, and Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. They have been going out steadily since the library began offering them, but have really been flying off the shelves since last week. At the library they decided that a lot of people must have been given DVD players for Christmas presents! Congratulations Helen - enjoy your free time.

Wendy Sampson has been a Great worker at the Family Resource Center in Sodus for ONE YEAR. Her anniversary was January 2. Everyone appreciates all her dedication and kindness!

David DuBois is recovering from a shoulder operation. He has been a trooper patient! Hope you recover quickly!

As always, the Family Resource Center is accepting good usable furniture for the low-income families in Wayne County. We do not charge these families for these donations! A nice tax write-off! The Sodus Chamber of Commerce met January 9 at the Stegar Haus. Bill Bolling from WCTA spoke on Identity Theft.

I was reading about the Sodus High School students whose bus caught on fire on the way to Florida. Thank goodness no one was injured, and they didn't lose their belongings for their trip. I'm glad the students were able to continue their trip it sounded like a great vacation. Five days and four nights to Nassau, visit to the Metro Zoo, cruise to the Bahamas. I hope they had a wonderful time and were able to put the bus ride behind them. What a Senior Trip!

It's also sad to see that Myers Community Hospital is closed. I had many a trip to the hospital for routine tests, delivering babies, and during my stay after the accident. It was nice to have it so close; I always found the people to be friendly and helpful. Convenience of it couldn't have been better, a short distance down the road and next to the doctor's offices would could have been better. I am sorry.

mussie tussie While watching a TV show on a Saturday afternoon, we saw a really cute idea for a girls get-together. It was a Victorian Tea and had as party favors mussie tussies filled with dried flowers. We changed the idea to a Christmas Cocoa and of construction paper made mussie tussies filled with candy. Christmas is of course over but this would be a cute idea that could be adapted to a Valentine's Day theme and a fun get-together of friends. The construction paper mussie tussie could be made from pink construction paper formed into a cone shape and the inside lined with pretty tissue paper with hearts, then filled with conversation hearts and candies. Curled red pink and silver ribbon lightly curled and hung from the door sills and could be called a Valentine - we can leave that up to you ... some tea or cocoa in pretty cups, pretty napkins and little cookies.

Have a great week, and thank you to everyone who sent me their information.

I hope to hear from you next week
