Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

Well, I don't know how everyone else feels but, if winter doesn't calm down soon we'll all be looking for warmer places to escape to. (Perhaps pick up a palm plant, put on the sunglasses and get deep inside your imagination? At least until it's time to go outside and start all over again.)

Sodus, Williamson, and North-Rose schools were all closed one day, but everybody's getting around okay today.

Sodus Town Chamber of Commerce Membership dues should be in by February 1, and if they are paid by that date, they will be only $40. Don't forget the next meeting is scheduled for February 6 at Nick's Family Restaurant, beginning at 6 p.m. Reservations should be called in to Mary Jane Mumby 493. 4067 by Feb. 5 so seating can be arranged. A while back Ruth Lennox sent along this recipe for Whoopie Pies. If you lost the recipe, or just never saw it and are looking for a nice snack or dessert idea here you are:

  • 1 cup Crisco
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 4 l/2 cups flour
  • 1 cup cocoa
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 cup hot water

Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs then beat. Add milk and vanilla, then buttermilk. Add cocoa four and salt. Put soda in hot water; and add it last. Push batter off a teaspoon onto a cookie sheet and bake at 375 for 8 minutes. If dough is too runny, add a little more flour.

Make this filling and put it between two baked 'pies.

  • 2 egg whites
  • 2 Tbsp. flour
  • 4 cups confectioner's sugar
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 tsp. milk
  • 1 cup Crisco

Mix ingredients - add Crisco last.

If you are interested in this year's winery tour don't forget to find out from Amy Toye at the travel agency if she still has spots open. You purchase a ticket and go to as many wineries as possible for two days. This year, the trip will be November 15 and 16 and the cost is $160 per person. As of last week, she still had 20 spots available. Sounds like Amy has many fun travel ideas for this year.

As I'm typing this, the dogs are acting really crazy. Must be all of this snow - it's getting to them too. I don't think, however, they need to include me in their commotion.

Tomorrow (Sat., Jan. 25), the Sodus Center Fire Hall will be having a Roast Beef Supper from 5 p.m. until....

Did You know the oldest Sugar Maple Tree in New York State resides right in Wayne County? The state tree for New York State is the Sugar Maple. It is 375 (+/-5) years old! It is nestled right next to the Ruffell Log Cabin at the Heritage Square Museum located at 7147 Ontario Center Road in Ontario. The tree has a height of 76 feet and a spread of 79 feet. It has an amazing girth of 17 feet 10 inches. The height of the canopy would have been greater, but many top branches were broken when the tree survived the ice storm of 1991. Be sure to visit Heritage Square and see this championship specimen. Pretty neat! (Seems like yesterday Mr. Toner from the Sodus Elementary School took the students to tap maple trees...Amazing how long it takes that sap to drip into the bucket...And it's so easy to just pop open the top when we are having pancakes and waffles. I had no idea so much went into making it.) There are many really interesting things to see at the Heritage Square, including the last remaining log home in our area, built during the Civil War by James Ruffell.

A nice way to get through a wintry weekend is to share some fun stories:

Grandma Summer by Harley Jessup. (Besides writing this cute story, Harley was the production designer for the feature film James and the Giant Peach. He also worked as an art director for Lucasfilms. He received an Academy Award for Innerspace and was nominated for Hook.

The Magic Kerchief by Kirby Larson

Bringing Down the Moon by Jonathan Emmett

Carol Garland and Robin Whitting would be glad to help you find any books you would like to read with your children.

January Birthdays: Jim Malone, Ronny Downey, Amanda Dolan.

If you have birthdays you'd like to share please let me know at

As always, thanks to everyone who contributed to the column, I learn a lot sitting at the keyboard.

Have a great week and try to stay as warm as you can. (Stock up on the soup and cocoa.)
