Marion woman wins AKC Award

The American Kennel Club has announced that Jane Troy of Marion received the American Kennel Club Community Achievement Award for her outstanding work with the Kanadasaga Kennel Club.

The American Kennel Club, the largest not-for-profit purebred dog registry in the country, instituted the Community Achievement Awards in 1993 to support and encourage the efforts of its local clubs to bring the message of responsible dog ownership to the general public. Each honoree received a certificate and $1000 check payable to their club to further the organization's public education or canine legislation efforts.

An active member of the Kanadasaga Kennel Club, Troy founded her club's AKC Canine Ambassador program, chairs the club's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) testing program, and teaches pet CPR in her community.

As a Canine Ambassador, Troy and her Cairn Terrier 'Rickie' visit schools, hospitals, and other groups on a regular basis. One of her most memorable visits was with a local Girl Scout troop working on their pet badge. With the guidance of Troy, the cadets arranged visits with veterinarians, groomers, and others in the community to see first-hand which careers they can pursue if they choose to work with dogs. Troy provided AKC Gazettes and AKC Events magazines and talked to them about The American Kennel Club and its mission.

Troy presented a 'project show' for mentally challenged youth at a local high school. Troy spent nearly two hours discussing purebred dogs, the AKC, grooming, nutrition, exercise, playtime, obedience and general care. Troy's presentation included teaching students how to care for dogs, a skill that will translate to their interactions in society.

Since she became chairperson of the club's CGC program, 60 teams have passed the CGC test and have visited hospitals, schools and nursing homes. The club holds two or more tests each year.

The AKC, founded In 1884, is one of the oldest sports-governing organizations. It maintains the largest registry of purebred dogs in the world, oversees the governance of the sport of purebred dogs, and keeps records of competitive results.
