Caucuses held for Newark Elections

Republicans and Democrats in Arcadia held caucuses this week to nominate candidates to run for two expiring Newark Village trustee seats.

The Arcadia Republican Committee conducted a caucus on Monday night with 104 eligible village Republicans taking part in the voting.

Incumbent Kurt Werts received 69 votes; newcomers Chris Avery and Joe Colasurdo garnered 57 and 50 votes respectively.

Werts, a retired school teacher, was first elected in 1999. Before winning a seat on the Village Board, he served on the village's Planning Board for 12 years. Avery is currently the Chair of the Planning Board, and has been since 1997. He was first appointed to the Board in May 1993.

Werts and Avery will face Jack Dubler and Eleanor Palermo in the March village election. Arcadia Dems caucused last night.

Dubler ran a close race two years ago for the Mayor's seat, losing to Peter Blandino with a count of absentee ballots. Palermo's husband, John, is currently a trustee but has decided not to seek re-election.
