Symphony at Newark School

The Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra is planning a concert at Newark Middle School, Saturday Feb. 8, at 3:30 p.m. The school is located off Peirson Avenue, near the high school.

The concert features two young soloists. The orchestra, under the direction of Nancy Strelau, will accompany pianist Daisy Chei for her performance of a Haydn concerto, and violinist William Cho for Lalois Symphony Espagnole. Other pieces include the Poet and Peasant Overture by Suppe and the Lincoln Portrait by Copland, which features Robert Hicks as narrator.

Tickets at the door are $5. Children 12 and under are admitted free. Call 331.6717, or visit www.flso.org

The Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra was formed in the fall of 1971 as the Wayne County Symphony with approximately 45 members. As membership grew, the group incorporated in the mid-1970's under its current name.

Rehearsals moved from Marion to Red Jacket High School, and then to the Canandaigua Middle School. FLSO performance venues include area colleges and high schools, wineries, lakeside and lawn concerts, area churches, the Smith Opera House, and the Old Sodus Point Lighthouse.

The roster of 80-plus members is comprised of a diverse group, including professionals of many vocations, musicians, and students in the Greater Rochester and Finger Lakes areas.
