Open House for Peppermint Days

The Wayne County Historical Society will be holding the annual Peppermint Days Open House on Saturday, July 12, from 10-4 at the Old Jail Museum on 21 Butternut Street, Lyons.

From 1854 through 1960, the twenty-four 9 x 4 x 7 cells of the jail held the infamous, like convicted murderer William Fee (the only person ever to be executed in the Wayne County Jail) and notorious train robber Oliver Curtis Perry, and the more common criminals, train riders, drunks and petty thieves.

In 1961, the empty jail and attached sheriff's residence became home to the Wayne County Historical Society and was filled with permanent and temporary exhibits that display examples of life in early Wayne County, New York.

Exhibits in the home include a 19th Century Kitchen, a Childs Bedroom, the Weaving & Spinning Room, the Civil War Room, the Glass and Pottery Room, the Sheriffs Parlor, and the Native American Room.

Barn exhibits include a well-stocked general store, the only remaining horse bridge from the original Erie Canal, early farm equipment, a collection of antique license plates, and maple sugaring, coopering, ice harvesting and leatherworking exhibits.

Refreshments, donated by the WCHS Board of Directors and Zappia Vending Service, Inc., will be served to guests. There is no admission for this public event, but donations are always appreciated.

For more information, contact the Society office at 315.946.4943, Tuesday-Friday, 10- 4. After July 8, the Museum will be open Monday-Friday, 10-4 and Saturday and Sunday 12-4.
