Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

mgoodcooke@yahoo.com

It was such a nice week, we got a truck load of mulch for the gardens and thought it would never disappear! It was exciting for the first couple of wheelbarrows full, and then it became overwhelming. We got it all done, finally (four days later), and I peeked out the front window this morning to be sure it was really gone. It's nice to see the gardens all finished, but it took a lot to get there.

Tomorrow is the Fourth of July and Sodus Point will be full of fun. You can enjoy Breakfast on the Bluff at the Lighthouse. AND, on July 4 & 5, there will be the Sodus Pt. Carnival on the Bay, Sodus Point Ballfield. On July 4 - Fireman's Parade at 7 p.m. and on July 5 - Fireworks at 10 p.m. (NOTE: There will be no carnival rides.) The hours will be from 4-11 p.m. on both days.)

Sodus Chamber news: In an effort to promote Sodus Township as a favorable place to live, work, shop and visit, the Sodus Chamber of Commerce is promoting 'Chamber Checks.' These 'checks' will be handed out at the Patriotic Pet Parade and the Olde Tyme Country Faire to held August 8 & 9 in Sodus. They will be good for a 10% discount at the participating merchants listed on the back of each check. (Alcohol, tobacco and sale items are excluded from the discount.) The 'checks' will be good until the end of the year to encourage people to come back to Sodus to use them. Businesses need not be a Chamber member to take advantage of this promotion. Merchants who join the promotion will be listed on the back of the 'checks' and also given a sign to display. Fee for non-members will be $10. (No fee for Chamber members). For registration, call Mary Jane Mumby at 483.4067 by July 14. The Chamber is encouraging all merchants in the Township to take advantage of this weekend by holding sidewalk sales, special discounts, extended hours and other activities to highlight their business.

Did you remember to register for the Summer Reading Program at the Williamson Library? June 30 is when it began. Hurry so you don't miss out on any of the fun. We got our package today. In the package there is a picture frame. The kids decorate the frame with the small palette of paints, add a picture of themselves and take it back to the library Art Museum. Then the kids get to enter their names in the drawing for a Fabulous Prize. On the reading sheet, they color in a spot for every l5 minutes they spend reading or just spending time with a book. Pre-School Storytime is for ages 3-5 and begins at l0:30, July 9. Kids ages l0-l5 are needed to be Reading Buddies and a training session will be on July ll, from l0:30 to ll:15 a.m. in the library's meeting room. The kids 6-9 can have a Book Buddies reading team at l0:30 on July l6, 23, and 30, with a Pizza Party for all Book Buddies on August 6 at l0:30. The new readers will team up with their older buddies for 30 minutes to read books together. Registration is required for this program.

The Sodus Free Library is also participating in the Picture This, Imagine That reading program. Registration was the beginning of the month but I'm sure if you'd like to join in on all the fun, you could ask Carol Garland, the Librarian. Monday, July 7, starts the fun off with the Story Hour from l0:30 -ll:30 with Mrs. Combes. (This is for the Preschool - Kindergarten group.) Carol will explain all the details to you when you register, and I will explain more in the next column. (I saw Carol on Tuesday and she looks great... happy as always. And she is excited about the Summer Reading Program... you'll soon find out why.)

July is Recycle Month at the Humane Society Shelter. Support the organization in a nearly effortless way. Just take them your returnable bottles and cans! Simply stop by shelter and drop off your donation. They'll take care of getting them to the recycling center. Be sure to tell your friends! Proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Wayne County

Here's a nice Fourth of July recipe from Weight Watchers:

Red, white and blue dessert

  • 2 cup blueberries
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 cups strawberries, hulled and quartered
  • 1/2 cup uncooked old-fashioned oats
  • 2 Tbsp unpacked brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp reduced-calorie margarine, melted
  • 1/2 cup lite whipped topping

Toss blueberries with 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar in a small bowl; set aside. Toss strawberries with remaining tablespoon of granulated sugar in another small bowl; set aside.

Preheat oven to 375F. Stir together oats, brown sugar and margarine in a third small bowl; spread mixture on a sheet pan and bake, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned, about 15 minutes.

Spread blueberries and strawberries in an 8 x 8-inch glass dish, alternating to create stripes. Sprinkle with oat topping, decorate with whipped topping and serve. Yields 8 servings. (Note: Retain the crispness of the oat topping by sprinkling it on the fruit just before serving.)
