Giant Octopus flies Saturday over Sodus Bay Larry Moss will set a new record July 19: the First Piloted Balloon Sculpture. After Larry Moss set the record in 2000 with a team of international balloon sculptors, he began to set his sights on a new project. The Sodus Point Community Center's annual summer festival series, The Great Sodus Bay Screen Family Fest, will host Larry Moss and 10 balloon sculptors from around the world as they launch a monumental octopus (around 100 feet wide by 200 feet tall) to be ridden by a professional pilot up to 2000 feet. Saturday, July 19 at 2 p.m. the fun starts at Pier Point Marina with a parade of 10 massive pieces of the sculpture, made just small enough to fit under the telephone wires, and will include a marching band, children, organizations and everyone else. At Oscar Fuerst Field in downtown Sodus Point, the final assembly starts and the festival will begin. The launch takes place at 7 p.m. The international balloon sculpting team will live for a week in Sodus Point as they create and prepare the giant octopus. Children, families and anyone interested may visit Pier Point Marinas boat hangar (look for signs) during the construction period for hands on explanations and demonstrations by the craftsmen. The festival will also have DJs, tricycle races, balloon sculpting demonstrations and explanations, face painting, and an outdoor movie after sunset. Television crews and other media will be present to capture this experience, as this is sure to be one for the ages! Visit festival website, www.gsbs.org
