Museum features Kiwanis, Lions and Rotary
The changing display began in May with the Newark Garden Club. The next installment in the series of social life includes the Newark Lions Club (chartered 1924), the Newark Rotary Club (chartered 1926) and the Kiwanis Club (chartered in 1980). Photographs, pamphlets, scrapbooks, plaques and banners are among the many artifacts displayed through August 15. After this exhibit, the schedule calls for Coterie, Travelers & Tuesday Clubs (8/15 - 9/30), The Newark Grange (10/1-.11/15). Balls, Receptions & Parties (11/15 -12/31), Elks & 1249 Clubs (1/1 2/15), Newark Country Club (2/15 - 3/31), Masons & Knights of Columbus (4/1 - 5/15) and V.F.W. & American Legion (5/15 - 6/30). Summer hours, through August are Tuesdays, 7-9 p.m. and Saturdays, noon to 3 (and always by appointment). Admission is free. The museum's fourth major exhibit Remember our Name! Newark Businesses in an Advertising Frenzy, 1880-1960, opened June 14. Two rooms of the museum are dedicated to all forms of advertising and signs from the 19th century to the 1950s. One item on display is the Rx Drugs/Soda Coca-Cola sign once hanging at the side entrance of Wildhack's Corner Drug Store. Many artifacts from businesses large and small are waiting to be discovered through March 2004. The Arcadia Historical Society's Cemetery Walk will be held the evening of Friday, October 17 at Newark Cemetery.
