Newark softball girls are State Champs
Newark defeated Sayville 1-0 in the game Saturday. Due to heavy rain Saturday, the final game was delayed and played Sunday morning. The game went 12 innings, tied 1-1. Sylina Santell singled to score Amanda Baker from third to give Newark its first NYS title in softball. The Reds (23-3) started the 12th inning with Baker on second in accordance with international tie-breaker rules. Baker went to third base on a bunt by Brandi Balschmiter. The Reds scored their first run in the third inning when Brittney Peters led off with a single and went to second on an infield out. Tab Pullen hit a double to send Peters across home plate. Balschmiter struck out 10 batters and gave up only three hits. (Photo by Jim Miranda) See complete coverage and color photos in the (Friday) June 13 Courier-Gazette. Copyright
