Newark Raptors play ball The Wayne County Raptors are playing Collegiate Baseball at Colburn Park in Newark. The athletes come from colleges all over the United States. They reside temporarily with your neighbors in Wayne County and become part of the community. The Wayne County Raptors are an NCAA Sanctioned Wood Bat League, one of ten in the country. The players do not get paid to play baseball, which would cause them to lose their amateur status and their athletic scholarships. They play to get noticed by major league scouting officials and further their careers. They are in this area for only eight weeks. Many players have to find jobs, which is not an easy task. Admission to games is still only $2. The players also work hands-on at the annual Baseball Camp, a program that offers two week-long training sessions for boys and girls. Matt Nein comes to the Raptors as manager this season with past experience as the pitching coach. He pitched for the Raptors in the 2001 season, which led the Raptors to win the Division championship. He is the assistant coach for Division III powerhouse Salisbury University location in Maryland. Nein is a recent graduate of Towson University in Maryland, where he played college baseball for four seasons and captained the team as a senior before moving onto the coaching side of the game. Aaron Long is an assistant coach. He has been involved with the player development aspects of baseball with area New York players for numerous years. Kevin Neimczura is in his first season as assistant coach with the Raptors. He finished his college baseball career at St. Bonaventure University. He wants to become a college coach. Watch for giveaways at the gate. All home games are at Colburn Park, Route 31 East, Newark.
