Canoes and kayaks on the Ganargua Saturday

The canoe and kayak trip on Ganargua Creek is June 21. Registration starts at 9 and the tips begins at 10. Bring your own canoe, kayak, and life preservers.

The New York State Legislature designated the Ganargua Creek as an official highway in 1899. This 'highway' was the route of the first settlers to the area that would become Wayne County.

The trip begins at Swift's Landing Park, on Galloway Road, between Palmyra and Newark. There are several white water chutes, mini-rapids that are short in duration. Obstacles such as fallen trees make portages necessary in the eight-mile trip. Ganargua Creek travels through fields and wooded lots, much like the early settlers in flat boats encountered. A great view of wild flowers and water fowl is guaranteed.

A picnic lunch will be awaiting people who make it to Norsen Park in Arcadia. Arcadia Transportation will provide transportation back to your vehicles in Palmyra, and the Newark Fire Department and Lyons Fire Department will be on hand to supply first aid should it be needed.

There's no charge for the three-hour trip. Boy Scouts will provide the lunch for a small donation. For additional information, call Dom Bartucca, 331.4065, or e-mail empire@eznet.net
