Help update local bodies of water for DEC

Periodically, the State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) updates and publishes a list of surface waters that: cannot be fully used as a resource or that have problems that can diminish their environmental integrity. The list is known as the Priority Waterbodies List (PWL).

The list is used as a resource for programming and resource efforts across Wayne County and the state. There are 20 waterbodies on the PWL list for Wayne County.

The NYS DEC and the Wayne County Water Quality Coordinating Committee (WQCC) are asking for the public to help assist in updating the list for Wayne County waterbodies. They ask for the public to nominate any waterbodies or stream segments with a known documented or substantiated water quality impairment within Wayne County that are not currently on the list.

If you would like to nominate a waterbody or stream segment, please contact the Wayne County WQCC, 10 Leach Road, Lyons, NY 14489 or at 946.4136 for more information. You will be asked to complete a nomination form that takes 15 minutes.

The waterbodies in Wayne County are:

  • Ganargua Creek
  • Port Bay
  • Sodus Bay
