Route 31 road work begins in Newark
route 31 roadwork

The orange signs are up and tree removal is expected to be underway today along Route 31 in Newark. Project Manager Mark Bush said that there will be alternating one-way traffic around the tree removal crew for most of today. He also said that the removals will likely begin at the west end of the project (near Mason Street), and progress eastward.

When this project is complete, Route 31 will be resurfaced between Mason St. and Colton Avenue and reconstructed between Colton and Lyons St. The culvert, handrail and sidewalk on W. Maple Ave. at the Perkins Elementary School will also be replaced.

Work within the business district will consist of pavement milling and resurfacing, the addition of bicycle lanes, pedestrian countdown timers on the traffic signals, decorative street lighting, tree plantings, new sidewalks, brick pavers in crosswalks and between the sidewalk and curb. New traffic signals will be installed at the Union Street/Main Street and Union Street/ East Avenue intersections.

Work within the reconstruction section will consist of installing new watermain and sanitary sewer near Colton Avenue. A new storm sewer will be installed. The corner of East Miller Street will be reconfigured as part of this contract to change the intersection alignment. The dip in the road at the former railroad bridge between Colton Avenue and East Miller Street will be filled in. A new traffic signal will be installed at the Union Street/Vienna Street intersection. There will be some gas main and utility pole relocations from East Miller Street to Vienna Street. Sidewalks and signs will be replaced throughout the job. During reconstruction, traffic will be maintained during work hours with alternating one-way traffic with flagmen. The box culvert in Military Run near the Perkins Elementary school will be replaced. West Maple Avenue will be closed to traffic near the school during the installation. The road will be closed between Elmwood Avenue and Brookview Drive shortly after the last day of school, and will reopen before school starts in the fall. A detour route will be posted.

Work is expected to be complete by July 31, 2004. The contractor is Fiore Construction of Rochester.

NYSEG is scheduled to begin utility pole relocations later this month, weather permitting, and begin gas main relocations between East Miller Street and Vienna Street later this month or early next month, weather permitting. Verizon Telephone is scheduled to begin relocation of their underground telephone duct bank between North Clinton Street and Cuyler street later this month, as weather permits.
