Newark Library cuts hours

Beginning June 1, 2003, the Newark Public Library will be closing an hour early Monday through Thursday evenings and at 5 on Fridays to adjust to funding reductions.

At a recent Newark Village Board meeting, the library's request for additional funding to maintain its current level of service was not supported. Village funding fell short by $25,000. In order to trim spending in a traditionally meager budget, hours of service and personnel will be reduced.

'Service is our most important product at the Newark Library and we will continue to strive to deliver the same exemplary service that we have in the past, we now must do it in fewer hours each week,' said Library Director Elly Dawson.

Other reductions in the library's spending will be made in library books and other materials as well as in programming opportunities, which have been offered in the past.

The Public Library was chartered to serve the Village of Newark over 100 years ago and its budget comes mainly from the village tax dollars. While less than .5% of village taxes are spent on the library budget - it is open and available for all residents of all ages at no charge. Additional tax support is supplied through the Town of Arcadia and Wayne County, fundraisers, library fines and annual fund drive.

Effective June 1, Newark Public Library Hours: Monday noon - 8; Tuesday to Thursday 9:30 - 8; Friday 9:30 - 5; Saturday10-3.
