Missing Sodus

Hope you all had a nice Mother's Day. What nice weather we finally had last week. I was behind a lady who was walking out of a building with her son, when she saw flower petals blowing off a tree. She said, 'Oh no!' thinking there was snow in the air. (Around here, you just never can be sure.)

The Wayne County Multicultural Arts will be presenting a Gospel Celebration on May 17 from l0 a.m. to noon. The event will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 4057 Main St., Williamson.

The MC will be Jackie Yon-Morris with the following included in the program: Brenda Dukes (Redeem COGIC) will sing a solo; Greater Harmony Male Group; Little Bethel MB Church; The Spiritual Revivers; Mt. Olive MB Church. The Program is being presented for the enjoyment of Gospel Music. For more information, contact Gloria Battle, Charlotte Bain or Jim Wood at 3l5.483.5249. Go and enjoy yourselves.

News from Ralph Everdyke, who, along with his wife Betty, is now back in Newark: 'We left Florida about 7:15 a.m. on Friday and we were planning on staying two nights on the road. We had good luck driving and when we got to the town where we were planning on staying the first night, Betty said it was too early to stop and why not try and go to the place we usually stop at. Okay, so we ended up in Rocky Mount, NC about 6 p.m. The next morning, we left there at 6 a.m. and landed in Newark about 4:45 p.m. We had pretty good weather most of the way. It was raining in Rocky Mount when we left, but a downpour, so it was really no problem driving. After about an hour, it cleared up and by the time time we reached Winchester, VA the sun was shining. I purchased gas in Florida for $1.37. In Georgia 1.28. Virginia 1.35, but when I reached Newark it was 1.65. Quite a difference. When we got home, we saw the results of the ice storm. Streets are still lined with fallen limbs from trees and I guess will be some time before all will be cleared up. We had not damage around our house. Of course, we don't have any tall trees. Some in the neighbor's back yard are beaten up a little.'

I had the chance to visit with Eileen Hooper while she was visiting up here from Florida. She, Brian and Susan stopped by and surprised me. They were staying with Eileen's brother George's daughter, Karen, for much of the time. The Hoopers were here for Ms. Steffler's (the teacher in Sodus School) wedding on May 3 . Eileen said the wedding was in Sodus and the reception was in Canadaigua. What a pretty day they had - not a rain drop in site (or snow flake).

At the Kraft Shack, Sandy has yet more cool crafts for you to make: Floral Garden Welcome Sign, Wed., May 14, 6:30 to 9 p.m. This plank board sign will be painted and stenciled and then decorated with silk wild flowers, ivy, clay pot, watering can, pail and other country items. $25 includes all. Summer Time Wreath Tues., May 20, 6:30 to 9 p.m. You will decorate a wreath with different flowers, ribbons, wooden sign and birdhouse. $35 includes all. Country Moose And Tree Wed., May 28, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. He's 36 inches tall and all country. Simple painting and then decorate like he's going fishing - complete with pole, bobbin, basket and pine cones. $29 includes all. Please remember to pre-register for all classes.

A tip while using the glue gun. (I am afraid of them, but for those who are brave enough to use them, there are tips to go with them.) The Kraft Shack says: When using a hot glue gun, wrap an adhesive strip bandage around your finger. This lets you press hot glued items into place without getting burned. Another tip I had heard is to always have a bowl or container filled with cold water just in case you do get burned. Aloe plants are great for burns, as well. (I, of course, get burned all the time so I have one in my kitchen just in case.)

Don't forget the Newark Volunteer Fireman's Carnival is from May 14 through May l7. You can get advance sale ride tickets at Bodine's South End and Joey's Northside Grocery as well as Eckerd's - 5 for $7. On Friday, May 14, there will be a Chicken barbecue from noon-7 by Buster's Red Rooster. The band 'Roll the Dice' will play from 8 to midnight Friday, and the fireworks will begin at l0. (Rain date will be Saturday night.) On Saturday, May 17 there will be the Fireman's Parade at 6:30 p.m. Also on Saturday - unlimited rides $l0 from 1-4 p.m. Rides open nightly at 6 p.m. The Carnival is at the Firemen's Field in Newark on Barker Parkway (off Stuart Ave.).

The Flying Club of Williamson will be having their Flying Club breakfast on Sunday, May l8 at the Airport on Rt. l04. Prices are $5 and $2.50, all you can eat. While you are there, you can take a ride on an airplane. The cost is $20. Breakfast sounds good and runs from 7 a.m. to noon. There are many other fun events planned for the day, such as Antique Biplane rides an Antique and special cars on display as well as a motorcycle display. For the kids ther are clowns, games , face painting ....

Isn't there always a huge neighborhood garage sale over by Brantling this time of year? Maybe check the Pennysaver for that... I love that garage sale.

The Sodus Go-Getters will meet Thursday, May 22 at noon at the Sodus Third United Methodist Church for pot-luck lunch. Bring dish-to-pass and table service. Anyone over 55 is welcome to attend. The program will be Mayor John Cook of Sodus talking on the present and future of Sodus. The group is going on a bus trip to Turning Stone Casino on June 24. The trip will include lunch, time for gambling and seeing a show. It will be a fun day. A few seats are left for the bus trip, so if you are interested, call Dawn Wilcox at 587.9608.
