Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

It was a funny week weather-wise, some people had sunshine and others who had constant rain. One of these days, the weather will straighten up and we can all enjoy the sunshine and the fun events that come with it.

Hope you all had a nice Memorial Day. Most services and ceremonies have been held. (Is that Al Dobbin in that uniform? Someone tells me that his American Legion brothers are Louis LeRoy, John Henry and Ernie Piekunka.)

Williamson holds its parade today - the traditional Memorial Day. The parade begins at 6:30 at the American Legion and goes to Sunnyside Cemetery.

Tomorrow (Saturday, May 31...where did the month go?!), the Ontario Summerfest is underway at the Ontario Firemen's Exempt Field on Rt. l04. There will be lots of fun things to do for everyone: crafts, a chicken barbecue from l until sold out; a parade with floats, bands and lots more. There will be music at 7 p.m. and fireworks at 9 p.m. at Casey Park.

Also tomorrow, don't forget Sodus Cub Scout pack's chicken bbq, silent auction and yard sale, 9 - 4 at Dynalec.

The Sodus Commerce will meet June 5 at 6 p.m. at Nick's Family Restaurant. Mary Jane Mumby (483.4067) should be called by June 3 with your reservations.

Audrey Hopkin's son Sam says he will probably be back from Iraq in June. But no date of arrival back to the States yet.

The Sodus Point Information Center in Willow Park is now open on weekends. The Information Center is a valuable little building filled will all kinds of brochures and information to help you make your plans.

If you are looking for just that special piece to fit into your garden, maybe make a trip to The Brokendown Palace on Rt. l04 in Sodus. They are having an anniversary sale from June l - 7 with $5 off all glass. They have candles, windchimes and lots more.

A tour is coming up June 20-22 to New York City; 3-day Bus trip to Times Square for sightseeing, theater, shopping. Please call Lyons if interested for details at 315.946.5334. There's also an August 13 - 21 Ireland trip; 9-day, fully-escorted group to Shannon, Dublin, Killarney. Air, hotel, transfers, most meals, and tour included. Call for details; space is limited.

The Kraft Shack will have Chair Caning Classes on Tues., June 10, 17 & 24, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Must be willing to do homework between classes. Your chair needs to have holes around the edge and be cleaned and ready to cane. $40 includes all, except the chair. Please remember to pre-register.

Looking for a fun way to spend some time on a nice weekend? The L.W. Emporium in Ontario has many fun things to see and do. You can have a seat on the grass or picnic table and watch the Chainsaw Artist create masterpieces from ordinary logs. And don't forget - free train rides through the complex on the weekends (weather permitting, of course). You can spend the day there shopping, have lunch at the Trackside Cafe, walk around our Turn of the Century Village and have dinner at the Branding Iron Steakhouse. The L.W. Emporium is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If you have any information you'd like to share, please send it along to me at

Are you taking a great yoga or exercise class you think is great and would like others to enjoy as well , let me know. Pictures are always fun to share too, everyone loves to look at pictures and remember the people who used to live in Wayne County.

Have a great week and enjoy each other's company. As my Mom always says: life is short and this is not a dress rehearsal.
