Newark Reds take softball title

The Lady Reds won the Class BB softball title Thursday, after defeating the top-seeded Victor Blue Devils 1-0 at Brockport. Newark was seeded number 2.

Coach Mike Muscolino put sophomore Brandi Balschmiter on the mound, and that turned out to be a winning move. She was named Most Valuable Player, striking out 12 and allowing only five hits. It was Sylina Santell who scored the winning run in the top of the 10th inning on a throwing error.

The Lady Reds were 20-3 after the May 29 contest.

Newark plays Waterloo in the NYS Class B Regional Qualifier today (Saturday, May 31) at 2:30 p.m. at SUNY Brockport.
