Public hearing on raising sales tax

For months, county officials have laid the groundwork to hike sales tax from 3 percent to 4 percent. In June, the state raised sales tax from 4 to 4.25 percent, so currently, Wayne County residents pay 7.25 percent. Some legislators say that if the county does not increase the local sales tax, property owners will be the ones to pay. To soften the blow of a sales tax hike, the county has already passed a resolution to eliminate sales tax on clothing next year.

The Wayne County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, November 18 at 1 p.m. in Lyons. The hearing will be held in the second floor courtroom of the old Wayne County Courthouse.

Whether or not you can attend the hearing, Arcadia Supervisor Joe DeSanto said early this week that he would like to hear from residents on both sides of this issue. Call DeSanto during office hours at 331.7369.
