Newark women attend Pilgrim Dinner
These Newark residents recently learned that they had ancestry on the Mayflower. Kem's ancestor was Stephen Hopkins. That family had the distinction of giving birth to a baby boy named Oceanus on the way over. Doebler had nine ancestors who included John Alden and Governor Wm. Bradford. The Pilgrim Dinner was held at Twelve Corners Presbyterian Church in Rochester. The program was started by the son of the late Sheldon Fisher, noted historian from Victor. He gave some brief words about his father. This year was the 65th gathering. Another speaker, a professor from Geneseo College, spoke about the women on the Mayflower. The conditions the first winter were very severe and many of them died. Several of the men had left their wives and family behind and were joined when conditions improved. The highlight of the program was the roll call. The names of each family on the Mayflower was called and a show of hands was recorded. Kem and Doebler then saw who else had similar ancestry. If you had ancestors who came over on the Mayflower and you would like to be notified about next year's dinner, call Karen Doebler at 331.8768. Copyright
