Help celebrate 150 years of Old Jail

Members of the Wayne County Historical Society are preparing for a year-long celebration of the 150th anniversary of the construction of the former Wayne County Jail, the building that now houses the Wayne County Old Jail Museum at 21 Butternut Street, Lyons.

The Society is asking any former employees of the Butternut Street Jail or relatives of the former sheriffs to assist with the celebration. The Society needs pictures of former sheriffs or employees that can be borrowed and duplicated for use in the exhibit, the loan of jail artifacts for the exhibit, and jail-related memories. To help with this project, call 946.4943, Monday-Friday, 10 to 4.

From 1854 through 1960, the twenty-four cells (9x4x7) of the jail held a few infamous criminals, like notorious train robber Oliver Curtis Perry, and many more common wrongdoers, train riders, drunks and petty thieves.

In 1961, after the construction the new Wayne County Jail on Route 31, the empty Butternut Street jail and attached sheriff's residence became home to the Wayne County Historical Society and was filled with permanent and temporary exhibits that display examples of life in early Wayne County.

Throughout 2004, the anniversary will be observed in a variety of ways. Being planned are a Wayne County Jail exhibit that will be displayed throughout the year at the Museum, three jail-related History on the Road lectures entitled, 'The Life and Crimes of Oliver Curtis Perry,' 'The Hanging of William Fee,' and 'Time Served in the Wayne County Jail,' and the October 2004 production of a two-act play reenacting the trial of notorious train robber Oliver Curtis Perry.
