Wolcott Rotary celebrates its 75th year

The Wolcott Rotary Club celebrated its 75th Anniversary with a gala party held at the Sodus Bay Heights Golf Club last Saturday (October 18). Sixty Rotarians and guests from throughout Rotary District 7120 participated and enjoyed the musical entertainment of Nancy Compton and Mike and Kelly Witkowicz.

Wolcott Club President Dr. Derek Chan and his wife Belle welcomed the many guests and led the activities. The dining room was tastefully and colorfully decorated. Each table had a centerpiece consisting of a beautiful floral arrangement and balloons that were taken home by the lucky winners of a raffle.

Club Historian Ed Wheeler presented a history of the 75 years of Wolcott Rotary. He divided the presentation into three 25-year parts and was assisted by Gertrude Fowler who told of life in the Wolcott Community some 75 years ago.

Wolcott Town Supervisor and Chairman of the Wayne County Board of Supervisors, Marvin Decker, extended his congratulations and appreciation for the good work that Rotarians do in the greater community.

The District Governor's message was delivered by District Governor Nominee Eric Parker, from Perry. He congratulated the Wolcott Club on its long history of doing good work in the community and throughout the world by living up to the Rotary International motto of Service Above Self. He said the Club should be proud of its successes, extend itself to other prospective members, and continue its efforts.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the distinguished and honored Paul Harris Award to Rowena Blake by District Governor Nominee Eric Parker. He explained this prestigious award, named after Paul Harris, who founded Rotary nearly 100 years ago. He said that Rotary is more than just about members but about their families too. The award signifies a gift of $1,000 made in her name to Rotary International to further its work toward friendship and good will throughout the world. Rowena is the daughter of Ralph Mason, District Governor in 1957-58. He is the only District Governor ever elected from the Wolcott Club. Rowena's late husband, Marsh Blake, was a highly respected president of Rotary in 1960.

John Monson, Mayor of the Village of Wolcott, read a proclamation lauding the contributions made by the Rotary Club to the Village over the years.

The Wolcott Rotary Club meets each Wednesday at the Wolcott Elks Lodge at 12:05. All business and professional men and women are invited to attend and participate in this Service Club's activities. The next local event scheduled is the annual Pancake Day feast at the Wolcott Fire Hall on Election Day, Nov 4.
