Collection for hazardous household waste

The Western Finger Lakes Solid Waste Management Authority Board is planning to authorize Chairman Robert Multer, Yates County and Administrator Sharon Lilla to execute necessary documents for a household hazardous waste collection.

The event will be held Saturday, October 11. Homeowners from Wayne County are able to bring materials to the hazardous waste collection. It is required to first call for an appointment and give a list of materials to be collected. Anyone interested in participating should call the Authority office in Lyons at 1.800.724.3867.

'We know that many people have materials they cannot dispose of in the regular trash. We are arranging this opportunity to help people clear out their basements and garages,' said Marjorie Torelli, Public Relations/Education Coordinator for the Authority.

In addition to collecting hazardous chemicals from households, the Authority will contract to dispose of computer components and electronics. Residents bringing in these materials may be charged a small fee for monitors.

Household Hazardous Waste includes many materials from the home, garden and garage. Oil-based paints and stains, garden chemicals, and cleaners from the home are all materials included in the collection.

Materials that will NOT be collected include: latex paints, stains or driveway sealers. Those products can be air-dried or absorbed with kitty litter. When latex materials are dry, they may be disposed of in the regular trash.

For more information, call the Western Finger Lakes Authority at 1.800.724.3867 by Friday, October 3.
