Red Cross needs help after disasters

Griff Mangan, Jean Craft and Vince Craft

Pictured at the Red Cross dinner Wednesday at the Newark VFW are Griff Mangan (volunteer since 1976), Jean Craft (since 1977) and Vince Craft (40-year volunteer).

The American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, the financial mainstay for the organization's response to large-scale disasters, is at its lowest level in more than 10 years.

With only $1.2 million available, the Red Cross is making a plea for help as the nation heads into the most active and destructive hurricane months. Though residents of New York State were spared from major damage from Hurricane Isabel, the damage to states along the coast has been devastating.

Everyone remembers the ice storm in New York this April. Red Cross was there providing food, shelter and other emergency needs to those affected. The minute a disaster strikes, the Red Cross goes into action, mobilizing volunteers and supplies to provide comfort until the recovery operation is complete.

Marsha Evans, President and CEO of the American Red Cross states, 'For the Red Cross, being prepared not only means having trained volunteers, supplies and equipment ready to go - it means that we must have adequate funds to be able to respond immediately.'

Please help the American Red Cross by making a financial donation today.

Donations can be mailed to Wayne County Chapter American Red Cross, 165 E. Union Street, Newark, NY 14513 designated to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to help victims of all disasters. If you would like additional information - 331.3783.
