Lecture on Odyssey at Lyons Museum

A noon lecture and discussion series, led by Victor Harris and featuring the Odyssey, will be held April 28 at the Old Jail Museum on Butternut Street.

'Classic Snack' series is sponsored by the Wayne County Historical Society, and is free and open to the public. Following a description of the piece, there will be a discussion period.

The Odyssey is a story written about Odysseus, the king of Ithaca who was later called Ulysses by the Romans. When summoned to join his fellow chieftains in the war against Troy, he could not bear to leave his young wife, Penelope, and their son. After pretending to be insane and then having his faked madness discovered, Odysseus resignedly fitted 12 ships and set off for Troy.

Ordinarily the trip from Troy to Ithaca would have taken only a short time. The Greek gods, however, decided that it should take Odysseus ten years to reach his wife and son. During those years he and his men endured a series of remarkable adventures.

Harris earned his Bachelor's degree in History and Master's in Library Science at SUNY Geneseo. He taught history at the high school level for several years, received the University of Rochester Excellence in Teaching Award, and now works for the New York State Research Foundation. He researches, writes and lectures on historic and literary topics.
