Sutton will speak on Butler history

The next session of History at Noon session, sponsored by the Wayne County Historical Society, will be held on Wednesday, May 5 at the Old Jail Museum on 21 Butternut Street, Lyons. Leola Sutton, Chairman of the Butler Historic Preservation Society, will be the speaker and her topic will be 'Butler History.'

The town of Butler was formed from the town of Wolcott on February 26, 1826. At one time known as Harrington's Corners, South Butler was a bustling community in the late 1800's. By the 1890s, South Butler boasted two general stores, a drugstore, a candy store, two blacksmith shops, a hardware store, three milliners, two wagon shops, a district school, four churches and several physicians.

The Butler Historic Preservation Society's current project is the restoration of the Butler Center Methodist Church on Butler Center Road. Built in 1836, this church is the oldest known Methodist Church in Wayne County.

Registration for this free event is necessary as seating is limited. Participants may bring a bag lunch, if desired, and cookies and coffee will be served compliments of the Wayne County Historical Society and Zappia Vending Service, Inc.
