boatersSpending two weeks on the Erie Canal is relaxing, say long time friends Judy and Ralph Young, of Vienna, Virginia and Bette and Rick Kirby of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, who are now on their way back to Seneca Falls. The couples rented a packet style canal boat and traveled from Seneca Falls to Pittsford.

They said they couldn't have picked a better place to overnight than Newark, because of the great facilities that the village has to offer. Not only is there no charge for dockage, but Newark has a variety of restaurants, movies, the canal trail, and friendly people.

The two couples' trip got a sudden change of plans when persistent rain forced the closing of a 30 mile section of the Erie Canal. The state Canal Corp. announced last Wednesday that water levels were 5.5 feet above normal, and the section from Baldwinsville to Lyons would remain closed until the flow subsided.

C-G Reporter John Zornow gave the Youngs and Kirbys a ride to Seneca Falls on Friday afternoon to pick up their automobiles, and begin their trip home to Wisconsin and Virginia respectively. They still leave with good memories of Newark and it's wonderful canal park.
