Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

The week wasn't too bad if you don't mind cooler weather. (When you are moving a dump truck size load of mulch, you get excited about those types of days.) I finally got all the mulching done. (Now to try to enjoy the gardens before the frost comes. Life is just too busy. Instead of saying, 'gotta work in the garden,' it's 'gotta go school shopping, get the haircuts in and, of course, this year, get the Senior pictures taken.' Where did that time go?

We bought Oscar some little things to keep him warm and he has used sweatshirts already. He looks so cute in a tiny red sweatshirt. He's not at all into the little flannel boots or the raincoat. How did the other dogs go without all the extras? (In fairness, Caesar did have a couple of sweaters and Sarah outgrew hers.)

I talked to Ralph Everdyke and he said their Florida condo is in the line of Hurricane Charley. They are on the second floor, so flooding isn't a problem, but windows blowing out would be. He and Betty are up here in Newark now, so they will be safe and probably the superintendent will board up their windows. He will find out when it hits this afternoon

AUGUST 14: Harry Potter Fans, listen up. You can find Harry at Sodus Point. The movie feature is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Remember to take along a light jacket and blanket just in case it gets cool. I have never watched Harry Potter outside but it does sound like fun. What a neat concept. The last time I saw an outside movie it was a drive in. When I talk about the sound coming out of the speaker on the pole, I still get odd looks from my kids. I haven't been asked yet if we had electricity, but because I was around when President Kennedy was shot, I have heard, 'Wow, you are old.'

dog Makes you wonder when you look back at all the fun things we old people had fun doing. Hopefully our kids will have some fun memories to tell their kids when they get old, too. Kids are so advanced these days. We have memories of roasting marshmallows and chasing lightning bugs and our kids have reality TV.

2nd Annual Clam Bake - Forman Park, Pultneyville. $3 per dozen or $8 per dinner (includes 2 dozen clams, 2 sides, and drink). Pre-sale tickets available for $6 by calling the phone number listed. Sponsored by Cracker Box Palace Farm Animal Haven and Demay Labor. Phone: 483.0132.

On Sunday (August 15), you can enjoy the sounds of the Canal Street Strutters. Dixieland Jazz at 2 p.m. at the old Sodus Point Lighthouse. Bring your blankets and lawnchairs. Just take some time to relax and enjoy..

If you are out and about maybe you could stop by the Gallery at the Point, 8515D Greig Street. There is Fabric Art by Jane Bartlett.

The Wayne County Fair is also going on in Palmyra. (Could be a wash out tonight and tomorrow.)

Taco Salad submitted by Denise Williamson

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 (1.25 ounce) package taco seasoning mix
  • 1 (16 ounce) can chili beans
  • 1 (16 ounce) bottle French dressing
  • 1 head iceberg lettuce
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) package tortilla chips
  • 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup chopped tomatoes
  • 4 tablespoons sour cream
  • 1/2 cup prepared salsa

flowers In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef and drain excess fat. Stir in the taco seasoning, chili beans and French-style dressing. Fill the dressing bottle 2/3 full of water and add to the skillet. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes Crush the bag of chips, open the bag, and toss the broken chips into a large bowl with the lettuce, cheese and tomatoes. When the meat mixture is done, combine it with the lettuce, tomatoes, chips and mix well. Then, add salsa and sour cream. Carol Garland's Mom & Dad just celebrated their 60th anniversary (!). The celebration was held at an open house at church. Carol, as usual, has been one busy lady.

Don't forget to take the time to read. You have such a wealth of information surrounding you everyday. I generally get all excited about all the new books I want to read. I get a tote bag full but, alas, I can't read them all fast enough. I guess my thought is I'll grab them while I'm looking at them or I may never see them again. Usually, I don't ever see them again.

Have a great week and try not to stress over all the school related things that come this time of year. Take each thing as it comes. Generally, they do not come one at a time though.

dogs Take the kids to the library programs and enjoy them while they are home. Remember to take time for yourself to read a book or take a walk so you enjoy the summer, too. Winter comes way too fast, so we have to enjoy the nice weather while we can. If you have good books you'd like to have mentioned, special dates or occassions or recipes please send them along to me at

mgoodcooke@yahoo.com - I look forward to hearing from you.
