I'm not sure whether the summer vacation is going too fast or not fast enough...depends on the day. I do enjoy getting up with the sun coming in the window, but I miss my old schedule. When the kids go back, the dogs will be confused for a few days. For now, the Moms are just confused. Getting through the school supply list, making sure all the summer book reports are getting done, making arrangements for Senior pictures and, of course, the notes letting you know what money you have to come up with for the kids to go on their 'trips.' The storm in Florida was scary. Ralph and Betty Everdyke's place is fine. I called Eileen Hooper. They were fine except for the fact the electricity in many sections went out. Her kids had been in school for a week and then, because of the storm, were out again. Susan didn't sound too upset about the time off. Beth Castle helped out many of the new wives who were 'first timers.' The men on the ships had been e-mailing their wives and they'd been calling Beth and their ombudsman in regards to what to expect from the base and the area. Beth, you are certainly a rock in your community. In speaking to Eileen, it was mentioned the Senior trip from Sodus will be going to Disney World. So is my son, who had thought he might be going to New York City. They are Seniors...they'll have fun wherever they go. The Sodus Point outdoor movies are over until next year, but the concerts are still going at the Lighthouse. Sunday, August 29 at 2 is Tim Allan; Banjo & Guitar - TV Entertainer & No. American Champion. News from Long Acres: 'Our maze is up and running, and I would like to reflect on the fact that we are lucky to live in an age where information is readily available, from multiple sources, and can be obtained in what seems like an instant. However, glitches still occur, and for some reason, folks come every year to do the Amazing Maize Maze on a day when we are not open. We hate turning these fun-seeking guests away, but our maze is more than a simple walk through the corn. We staff the maze especially for the dates we are open. Therefore, PLEASE help us spread the word. If you are recommending that friends or co-workers come to the Maze, check hours or have them call us to verify that it is open. 315.986.4202 or email us at Summer Hours (Now through Labor Day): THURSDAYS through SUNDAYS, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Open to the general public (no reservations necessary). A great book to read : The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom; for teens and all ages above Good movies to rent: Welcome to Mooseport Starting Tuesday, September 7, Monroe County's Seneca Park Zoo will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. every day. Visitors may remain on the zoo grounds one hour later, until 5 p.m. These winter hours will be in effect until Memorial Day 2005. The zoo is open 364 days each year. There is still time to enjoy the Anubis Baboons, this years visiting animals, before they depart! There are so many fun things to see and do, all year round at Seneca Park Zoo. School is going to begin for the kids soon. For some children it is exciting they can't wait to be with their friends and get back into their routines. The younger children ( and moms) have more worries and are more anxious about the whole thing. When my kids first went, it was just awful. I made sure not to cry in front of them and then would have spent the day being miserable. (But my mother straightened me out and made it so much easier.) Here are some ideas for making the first day and first week easier. When the bus run goes through for the Kindergarten be sure to go with your child to the school. They will feel better getting on the big bus and going into the school the first day if they have had the chance to go in with you. It's easier for the parents knowing what the classroom looks like and meeting the teacher... when you think about them during the day you have a place for them to be in your mind's eye. Even if the kids are older, try to make time in August when the teachers are fixing up their rooms, to visit so the child gets an idea of where the classroom is located and what it will look like. Meeting the teacher if you can is great for both of you. Pack the backpack the night before. The first morning is always stressful, so do as much as you can the night before. (By the end of the year, everyone is so used to the routine they are tossing things in the backpack as they are leaving.) It's fun to have the clothes, shoes and accessories out on the chair... helps to get more into the mood. Don't make it too exciting, though, that no one sleeps that night. Putting your little one on the bus for the first time is tough, but be strong for them. (Shed tears in the house....don't want them to get upset and decide they aren't going.) Plan something for your special day. Remember, you don't have to feel guilty. They have to go and they do come back with all kinds of fun tales to tell. Maybe plan to go out to breakfast with some friends who are doing the same thing that morning and feeling like you are. Have a friend come over to chat, or call your mom. That always helps. Treat yourself to something you've wanted to do but couldn't. Maybe go for a long walk on the beach at Sodus Point. But you have to get comfortable being in the house alone without them as well. Make that the second morning. Set aside a project in the house. Maybe do some needlepoint, read something, bake some cookies as a treat for when they come home. Also don't pressure them into telling you about their day right away or you will here 'nothin' very quickly. They are tired and will want to share after they have been home a bit. The little ones start sharing the minute their foot hits the ground. After a couple of days you will enjoy the quiet house, the room that stays clean for hours after you've cleaned it, time for you. And, as I said, they always come back and tomorrow you can start all over again. If you are a working mom you'll have some time in the bathroom to get ready without being interrupted, have a cup of tea or coffee .When I worked, my kids were older and my daughter went to school with me. It was traumatic for me to get myself moving and out the door. I have only the perspective of the stay-at-home mom and how lonely the house would get if I didn't make a plan for the day. Enjoy it - the day goes by really fast.
Have fun with the time the kids have left for their vacation and try not to stress too much over all the things they need to go back to school. Take it a little bit at a time or you'll get worn out and irritated. If you have ideas you'd like to share, or news, please write to me at I look forward to hearing from you.
