Red Suspenders heavily damaged by fire
By John Zornow

Dennis Powell's Red Suspenders Internet and Computer Service in Newark was connected to a Rochester fire and security system. That system, as well as quick response by the Newark Fire Department on Monday morning, will be credited with alerting firemen early enough to be able to save Powell's building at 360 West Union Street.

Powell's daughter Lara had been living upstairs and was able to exit the building safely.

Red Suspenders

Doyle Security of Rochester notified Wayne County 911 that a fire alarm had activated at the West Union Street location of Red Suspenders.

When firemen arrived at 5:30 a.m., thick dense smoke was pouring out of the structure. Newark Chief Doug Velte called for mutual aid from Lyons and Port Gibson Fire Departments, and NAVA ambulance corps.

It appears the cause of the fire was electrical. However, according to Powell, owner of the building and business, all power to the computers was shut down late Saturday, in anticipation of thunderstorms that night and Sunday.

Lost in the blaze, due to fire, smoke and water damage, were Red Suspenders equipment, stock, and records. Powell said both the building and contents, including customers' equipment, are covered by insurance.

Red Suspenders Internet service is not affected. - Powell had recently moved the Internet service off-site and customers should not experience problems with their Internet hook-ups.

The Powell family dogs who greet customers at the store were at Powell's home in Port Gibson at the time of the fire. Killed in the fire were three chinchillas, and Lara Powell's four cats Nikita, Tommy Girl, Java, and Lovey.
