$250,000 grant for watershed plan The Wayne County Water Quality Coordinating Committee (WQCC) has recently been awarded a $250,000 congressional grant to develop a Comprehensive Watershed Management Plan for Great Sodus Bay and its watershed. The plan will look at all aspects of enhancing, protecting and managing the water quality and natural resources surrounding the bay. Numerous elements such as hydrology, pollution, weed growth, water chemistry and public interests will be incorporated into the Plan. Perhaps most importantly will be the identification of both short term and long term options to improve and protect the quality of water within the bay. The plan will also investigate the possibility of applying materials such as Aluminum Sulfate to the bay sediments to help control excessive weed growth. The WQCC will partner with citizen groups from around the bay to coordinate this effort and will be scheduling several Public Information Workshops this summer. The WQCC will be working with Dr. Steve Souza from Princeton Hydro, LLC to develop the plan. The final product which will include recommendations for management will likely be applicable to other Wayne County Embayments to include: East Bay, Port Bay and Blind Sodus Bay. For more information on the Sodus Bay Comprehensive Watershed Management Plan or for information on other WQCC activities, you may contact a committee representative or visit the 'What's New' section of their website at www.lakeontario.net/wqcc . Congressman Jim Walsh helped make this effort possible.
