Could you feel that something was different when you went outside this week? Kind of like seeing the light at the end of the tunnel... Nice to go outside and not feel instantly frozen and chilled through for the rest of the day. News from Ralph and Betty Everdyke: 'On one of our sunny and warmer days, Betty and I went to Sky Dive City. It is located on the east side of the Zephyrhills airport. We went over to watch people jumping. They are very active over there every day except when it is raining, I guess. Last year, one day when we were there, a group of people were jumping and I asked one of the fellows the cost. He told me it cost $17 to be taken up for a jump. It may be more this year. It is amazing how they can come swooping down at, I would guess at least 10 miles an hour, then they pull on the rear cords to the chute, and it slows them right down so they can land with a slow walk. You can also go up and ride down with one them piggy back. Don't know what that costs because I didn't have the nerve to try it. They are fun to watch anyway, and Betty says the hot dogs from the refreshment stand are good.' Thanks Ralph. News from the Zoo: WANTED: ZooTeens! The male Bornean orangutan was born January 29, to proud parents, Kumang and Lowell. This is Kumang's third offspring and the first for Lowell. This birth is highly significant for Bornean orangutans nationwide because the species is severely threatened in the wild. Wild populations of orangutans are found only in the tropical forests on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, and all populations are under severe threat. The main threats to orangutans are habitat loss, forest degradation, fires, and poaching. Seneca Park Zoo is the only zoo in New York State to exhibit Bornean orangutans. Debra Ross has sent me information for the column. The radio station has decided to help the family out. WARM 101.3's Dee Alexander has asked me to help get the word out about donations to the Radu family of Spencerport. The family, with nine children, emigrated here from the Ukraine. The mom was very recently killed in a car accident. She was the family's breadwinner - the dad is disabled. The Epilepsy Foundation has set up a collection to help the family get through this very rough time in their lives. They are in urgent need of clothes, books, toys, and other types of household items. The radio station will be collecting items for the family at the Winter Break Nature Adventure on February 20, but perhaps this is the right week (as the season of love) to talk with your kids about generosity; perhaps together you can sort through your stuff and find some things you no longer use, to give to the Radu family. You can see more information about where to drop off items, and what each of the children specifically needs, on the WARM web site at http://www.warm1013.com/tonyanddee_detail.asp?id=208 Michelle Abbey just moved into her new place. Good luck, Michelle. Don't forget the Sweetheart Sale at L.W. Emporium, Knickerbocker Rd., Ontario. Sale items are displayed in the lobby and booths with red heart tags. And on February, 22, there's the 2nd Annual Chili Blues Fest at Skippers Landing, Lake Bluff Rd, Wolcott. The Mardi Gras-themed, family fun, fundraiser supports the Harbor Management Plan grant application for Great Sodus Bay. There will chili, salad bar, and fresh bread. Music by Hollywood Al and The Mix. Raffles, beads, and masks. Call for additional information. 315.483.6391 If you like Siamese cats, the Humane Society in Lyons has a beautiful Siamese mix who looks very much like a pure bred Siamese. She is a one-year-old female called Lorna. Peek at the Humane Society site to see her up close. Lorna is a stray. Here is a recipe that sounds really good.
