Newark athlete to compete in Australia

Marliz Emil, a soccer athlete from Newark, will join a national team of Sports Tours USA athletes competing in Australia in July.

  Emil has been accepted to represent the United States. Her family is from the Marshall Islands in the North Pacific, halfway between Australia and Hawaii. Her parents are Manson and Tina, and the athlete is a junior at Newark High School. Her soccer coach for the past two years is Jason Dentel, and she also plays lacrosse.

Sports Tours USA is the nation's leading provider of international athletic experiences to athletes and their parents.

Founded in 1984 by a group of coaches dedicated to helping our nation's youth exceed their potential in sports and in life, Sports Tours USA offers eleven different sports to ten different destinations.

Athletes must pass two separate screening criteria before being considered for the team roster. Emil will dedicate the months prior to travel conditioning for the competition and providing services and volunteering in Newark to help earn the program cost for this unique experience.

She will be competing while learning about the culture and meeting people from around the world. She will visit historical sights and local attractions. The program gives American Athletes the opportunity to enrich their lives, attain a sense of global citizenship, and enhance their character development.
