Marking Spay Day for pets

dog The Doris Day Animal Foundation and the Humane Society of Wayne County, along with several veterinarians, invite you to celebrate 'Spay Day' on February 24.

Spay Day promotes the spay and neutering of pets as a primary means to save animal lives. Thousands of adoptable animals are killed every year in America simply because there are not enough homes for them.

Last August, the Wayne Co. shelter had to euthanize 64 cats and kittens. There were 72 cats already waiting to be adopted. Considering that our shelter is equipped to hold 50 cats comfortably, resources were already stretched to the limit by housing the 72. This was the worst summer on record for homeless cats, and it took its toll on the shelter staff.

During Spay Day USA 2003, an estimated 225,000 companion, and feral animals were spayed or neutered.

As of November 30, 179 dogs and cats were neutered/spayed through the Humane Society Low-Income Spay/Neuter Program. These figures mean something considering that two unaltered cats and their unaltered descendants can number as many as 420,000 in just seven years. Additionally, two unaltered dogs and their descendants can number 67,000 in six years.

For Spay Day 2004, the Humane Society of Wayne County is holding a drawing where several low-income pet owners will receive a free spay or neuter for their pet donated by a local veterinarian. If you are a pet owner and feel that you are in need of financial assistance in order to spay or neuter your pet, contact the Humane Society of Wayne County to enter your name in the drawing.

If you know of a pet owner who needs assistance with the cost of altering a pet, ask them to enter their name in the drawing. To enter call 946.3389, or stop by at 1475 County House Road in Lyons.
