Missing Sodus Every time we think we have felt or seen hints that spring is on the way (the birds singing, a feeling in the air, my Christmas lights off the front stoop), we look outside to see the little white flakes still coming. It'll be so nice not to have to worry about falling down every time we walk outside. I know the schools in Wayne County visit the Zoo on their field trips. I hope a few of the students had the opportunity to see the Tiger. I remember going with Mrs. Manning's class a while ago. It was fun and informative. It was fun to watch the kids when they went from cage to cage amazed at who was living inside. Monroe County's Seneca Park Zoo said goodbye to Prince, one of its Amur tigers on Sunday, February 22. Prince will be heading to ZooMontana in Billings, Montana this weekend. Recently, Kang, 20-year-old male snow leopard, died due to complications from kidney failure. Kang was the last surviving snow leopard at Seneca Park Zoo. This is the first time in over 50 years the zoo does not have a resident snow leopard. Cats live to be approximately 12 years old in the wild and tend to live longer in zoos. Kang lived a long life and had five offspring, three females and two males, who all predeceased him. You can help pay tribute to Kang by making a memorial gift to the Seneca Park Zoo Society. The next Sodus Chamber of Commerce meeting will be on March 4, 6 p.m. at the Heluva Good Cheese Plant on Pratt Road. There will be a short tour of the plant, followed by dinner and our meeting. Dinner will cost each member $5. Reservations are a must so that enough food is ordered. Please call Mary Jane Mumby by March 2 at 483.4067. E-mail received from Bonnie Bolling regarding the Ribis Triplets that were born recently. The Presbyterian Church is doing a formula fund and WCTA is doing a diaper drive to aid the family. Pam Heald said that the WCTA is also coordinating volunteers to make dinners, run errands, etc. She will get more information together and the Chamber will pass it on. I will let you know how you can help as well. The Chamber's Citizen of the Year Banquet will be at Sodus Bay Heights Restaurant on April 16. Cost is $21 per person (advance sale tickets only). Flyers will be handed out, or mailed, in March. Tonight (February 27) - Lenten Fish Suppers begin at Fairville Fire Hall, Rte.88 North. Eat in or take out. Menu: Haddock (baked or fried), baked potato with sour cream, cole slaw, applesauce, rolls & butter, ice cream, coffee, ice tea, milk. Handicap Accessible. Dinner $7. February, 28 is the Starlight Gala Dinner & Dance at the Chart House in the Quality Inn, Rte 88, Newark. The Dinner & Dance is a fundraising event for the Wayne County Historical Society. There's a Blood Drive today at the United Methodist Church, Main St., Williamson, 1-6 p.m. And there's a Spaghetti Dinner at the Sodus High Cafeteria, 5-7 p.m. Tomorrow, there's a Roast Beef Supper at Sodus Center Fire Hall, 5 p.m. until ? Chicken & Biscuit Dinner at Sodus Bay Sportsman Club, 4-8 p.m. A lot to choose from. New book to be released in the spring by Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel. Look for their new book which should be out this spring titled 'Plaidypus Lost.' It is about a little girl who keeps losing her favorite stuffed duck-billed platypus who, incidentally is wearing plaid. Hence the name 'plaidypus.' Also there is a new one out now called 'Jackalope' that is about a Jack rabbit who wants to change his appearance so he can be scarier. He learns a valuable life lesson that you should just be yourself. (Thank you, Jason Crummel for letting me know about the new books. In the spring, we will be sure to look for them.) News from the Kraft Shack: Sandy has just returned from a show in Dallas where she saw lots of new products to share. The merchandise will be arriving soon. She said to make sure to stop in and check it out. The Kraft Shack has a large Scrapbooking area with everything you'll need for scrapping. Sandy has dedicated her newsletter this year to her Grandma Elizabeth Glerum who passed away suddenly on February 4. STAINED GLASS CLASS: Thurs. March 4, Mon. March 8, Thurs. March 11, Mon. March 15 and Thurs. March 18, 6:30 to 9 p.m. You will learn how to make a stained glass window sun catcher. $45 includes all. A fun site to take a peek at is: webmom@thefamilycorner.com Of course you know you can grow small citrus trees in your home but do you know how to make them actually flower and bear fruit? I found out reading an article on this site. (Of course, getting Sarah to quit eating the flowers off my lime tree might help a lot.) Thanks to everyone who sent along information for the column: Jean E. Jump from the Zoo, Mary Jane Mumby from the Sodus Chamber and Jason Crummel. Have a good week and I hope to hear from others of you soon
