Meal Service asks for public support

Home Meal Service announced its support for the national March for Meals campaign. March for Meals is a nationwide initiative to end senior hunger, sponsored by the Meals On Wheels Association of America.

Senior meal programs such as Home Meal Service operate in almost every community. They provide more than one million meals each day to elderly citizens who cannot shop or prepare meals for themselves.

Home Meal Service serves 176 homebound each day. Last year, local volunteers delivered 49,409 meals to 379 frail, elderly, ill and disabled Wayne County residents.

Without this program those individuals might go all day without a meal. Not only would they be hungry, but they would also suffer long-term consequences of malnutrition, deteriorating health, and in some cases social isolation. Our friends, relatives and neighbors depend on Meal-On-Wheels to help them remain independent and at home.

Home Meal Service is asking individuals who want to help to do one of two things, either donate the money they would spend on their own lunch for a day or call the Home Meal Service office at 946.5622 to sign up to deliver Meals-On-Wheels.

Volunteer drivers are urgently needed throughout Wayne County. A couple of hours each month will help fill the void in many towns and villages where additional volunteers are needed. Meals-On-Wheels is only available in communities with active volunteer programs. Mileage reimbursement is available and volunteers are scheduled according to their wishes.

Contributions are tax deductible. Checks should be made payable to Home Meal Service and sent to 1519 Nye Road, Suite 400, Lyons, NY 14489.
