About The Netherlands. Most often we use the name Holland, rather than the official name, The Netherlands. A letter addressed either way will arrive at its desired destination. In early. times, Holland was the name of only one province but it was the country's largest and richest. In time, the name became applied to the entire country.

The city of Amsterdam was in Holland province. In more modern times, Holland province was divided into two provinces, North and South, with Amsterdam in the North and Rotterdam in the South. Rotterdam is one of the world's largest seaports. It is near to where our ancestors lived so that most emigrated from Rotterdam.

The name Holland is said to have grown out of an old word meaning 'hollow land' - below sea level. Roughly, one-third of the country has been reclaimed from the sea.
