Peppermint Days open house at museum Wayne County Historical Society will hold the annual Peppermint Days Open House on Saturday, July 10, from 8 to 4 and Sunday, July 11, from noon to 4, at the Old Jail Museum on 21 Butternut Street, Lyons. From 1854 through 1960, the 24 (9x4x7) cells of the jail held the infamous, like convicted murderer William Fee (the only person ever to be executed in the Wayne County Jail) and notorious train robber Oliver Curtis Perry, and the more common criminals, train riders, drunks and petty thieves. In 1961, the empty jail and attached sheriff's residence became home to the Wayne County Historical Society and was filled with permanent and temporary exhibits that display examples of life in early Wayne County, New York. Exhibits in the home include a 19th Century Kitchen, a Child's Bedroom, the Weaving & Spinning Room, the Civil War Room, the Glass and Pottery Room, the Sheriffs Parlor, and an exhibit featuring notable Women of Wayne County. Barn exhibits include a well-stocked general store, the only remaining horse bridge from the original Erie Canal, early farm equipment, a collection of antique license plates, and maple sugaring, coopering, ice harvesting and leather-working exhibits. Refreshments, donated by the WCHS Board of Directors and Zappia Vending Service, Inc., will be served to guests. There is a $2 admission fee for non- members.
