Alloway picnic always a success

July 10 and 11 were busy days for Alloway residents. The Alloway Peppermint Princess, Addie Fischer, rode in a beautifully decorated float in the Peppermint Days parade on Saturday evening. The float was pulled by a pickup truck driven by Thomas Smith. Addie's brother, Will, carried the Alloway banner.

Committee members, CJ Britt, president, Barbara Hawman, secretary, Amelia Engels, treasurer, and Sheldon King, reporter, rode in a 1964 Ford Mustang convertible, driven by Donald Brunner of Newark. Sixty residents and friends of Alloway gathered at the home of Amelia Engels Sunday for the annual picnic, enjoyed by everyone.

It was announced that Sean Odit and twins, Harlie and Danielle Pullen McQueen, had been presented Alloway awards, which are made to outstanding graduating high school seniors who reside outside the village. The awards are made in memory of William Hess, who gave his life for his country in the Battle of the Bulge in 1944.

A surprise award was made to Amelia Engels. Presented by her son, Brian, President of the Lyons Central School Board, it was for 'Outstanding Performance in Home Economics for the Class of 1942' - an award that should have been made at that time. Because it was World War II and because there was no money, it was not made.
