Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

Did you have the chance to see the events at Sodus Point on Saturday? The kids and I drove out and we had great fun. Just getting back to the area was nice in itself. We, of course, had to drive through the old neighborhood. The streets seemed so much smaller, but nice.

Melanie Pike had mentioned she was cleaning some things out and she wasn't kidding, either.

We had to check out the new location of the Williamson Library, which I must say is just beautiful. They must be thrilled - a nice big place for many more books. It was closed, but one day soon we'll come out to see the inside as well.

When we got to the baseball field in Sodus Point, nothing much was going on. Larry Moss was finished with his first act. I thought, 'Oh no, we came all this way.' I didnt want to miss all the excitement. There were large displays for the kids to do artwork on, the tricycle races, and huge blown up balloons of Simba the lion cub and a gorilla. Larry Moss began his show, which included everyone in the audience. My daughter and I were like, 'I don't want to do that,' but my son bravely went to get his three balloons and someone nicely came over with some for us. Everyone was going to take a total of l,300 blown up balloons (three for each person) and twist them into the shape of a blow fish. As the kids worked, I broke my first one. Someone was quickly there with a replacement.

After everyone got done with the first two fish, you then took the third balloon and linked the fish together, then we all joined until the baseball field was full of people holding the fish chain. We were all there to be a part of history and, if possible, to be a part of The Guiness Book of World Records. Well, we all did it, we broke the record, and after it was recorded, everyone got to pop the balloons or take some home if they wanted. It sounded like the worlds largest bubble wrap being popped. Everyone picked up any broken pieces that were found on the ground and clean up was a breeze.

The next act was Harley the clown. We saw a part of his clown act and then we went off to get something to eat. We didn't want to miss his dare devil stunts. Escape artist, illusionist and stuntman, Harley Newman did some of his unbelievable escapes and other feats. He performed many stunts, like walking on a stairway of swords, lying on 4, 5-7 inch nails, escaping from a head-lock by using his tongue. He took many volunteers from the audience. One man he taught to lay on a bed of nails, then Harley did it while 2 children and 5 men stood on top of him. You could see the nail imprints in his back afterwards. The bed had l300 flooring nails in it - points all sticking into his back. He has been on the David Letterman show as well as Jay Leno, many movies and has 2 world records for doing his work. Two things he does were said to be to dangerous for even Guiness. Later on that night, he was in a straight jacket 70 ft. in the air and had to escape as the rope was burning. We didn't see that part because we were going to visit Alice Clark on the way home.

Fun ice cream ideas from Allrecipes.com

To Scream For... To make ice cream treats they'll all scream for:

* Ice Cream Sandwiches. For homemade ice cream sandwiches, underbake the cookies slightly so they'll stay soft even when cold trying to bite through hard cookies with ice cream in between them is a messy proposition. Once the sandwiches are assembled, roll them in sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, or other colorful little candies.

* Sophisticated Sundaes. Make company-worthy sundaes by using sophisticated ice cream flavors like espresso, cheesecake, or toffee. Begin with a base of fudgy brownies or a slice of moist poundcake, and top it all off with toasted cashews or hazelnuts, fresh summer berries, or a drizzle of your favorite liqueur.

Sounds good....I have tried it with chocolate cookies and also with Chocolate chip cookies. The possibilities are endless.

Looking for another hamburger recipe? Stuffed Bacon Cheeseburgers from the Food Network:

1/2 cup shredded Monterey jack

4 slices cooked bacon, chopped

1 pound ground chuck

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

4 large hamburger buns, split

Ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard, for serving Lettuce, sliced tomato, onion, and avocado, for serving

Combine the jack cheese and chopped bacon in a bowl. Put the beef in another bowl and season with salt and pepper; use a rubber spatula to mix it in. Flatten 1/4 of the meat mixture in the palm of your hand. Squeeze together about a tablespoon of the cheese and bacon mixture to make a little nugget; put it in the center of the ground beef. Bring up the sides of the patty over the filling, making sure the cheese is completely covered by the meat. Flatten slightly for a nice patty shape. Set them side by side on a platter in the refrigerator while preparing the grill.

Place a large grill pan on 2 burners over medium-high heat or preheat an outdoor gas or charcoal barbecue and get it very hot. Brush the grates with oil to keep the burgers from sticking. Grill the burgers for 8 minutes per side for medium. (The USDA recommends cooking ground beef until it is no longer pink and the internal temperature is 160 degrees F.) Remove the burgers to a clean side plate while you toast the buns.

Rub the grill rack with more oil and place the buns cut-side down, toast for 1 minute. Serve the burgers with your favorite condiment and any garnish you like, such as lettuce, sliced tomato, onion, and/or avocado.

If you have a favorite recipe you'd like to share or you were at an event and you'd like to tell about it, or books you and your kids are reading for the reading programs at the libraries please send them along to me

There are a lot of fun things to do during the summer, you might see us wandering around the festival this weekend. Have a great week and do enjoy your summer it goes so fast. A short walk after dinner, sitting on the porch with the kids sharing some good stories or going to the beach to put your toes in the sand, collecting pretty stones... anything fun and relaxing.
