Missing Sodus We ventured out to Wayne County again this past Saturday. The weather was beautiful for the Olde Tyme Country Faire vendors, Antique Auto Show and the events for Saturday. We wandered from tent to tent. Oscar was in tow in his new 'puppy pocketbook.' He was pretty good (liked to peek out of the back to see where he had been, plus he was in a spot that avoided getting bopped in the head with my elbow as I took pictures). We did see some familiar faces. Carol Garland came up to say 'hi' and to meet Oscar. It was nice to chat with her. (Now, if I could just get her to face me when I take pictures of her booth.) It was fun to watch the kids make huge bubbles. (Betty is a good teacher.) We saw neighbors from the old neighborhood, Kelly and Gary Grey. (Felt like we had never left.) The winners of the Chamber raffle were John Catlin for first prize, Betsy Wahl, second; and Chris Gunther for third. All in all, The Sodus Town Chamber had a good faire with about 700 people throughout the day. And I finally did meet Mary Jane Mumby (good thing she had on her name tag.) It was nice to meet her. Over 150 people enjoyed the Pet Parade Friday night and stayed for the Street Dance with music from Steve Bates. The 'Curves Village People' performed a memorable rendition of YMCA to the delight of the crowd. The Sodus Library Reading Program has begun. Today is Krafts with Sandy from 1-2 p.m. Each week Sandy Hopkins visits the Library with her supplies and great ideas for a new fun craft. On Mondays, Story Hour with Mrs. Combes, who shares stories and songs with the kids from l0:30 - 11:30. Each Tuesday in August features the New Yorkers Reading Club - bring along a favorite book to share with the group. Everyone takes a turn reading a short passage so others can find new books to enjoy from 1-2. August 4 and l8, it's PJ Storytime. Come in your PJs and bring your favorite stuffed animal friend from 7-7:30 to hear Mrs. Garland read bedtime stories. August 5 is Bubble Day from 1 to 2. It is just as it sounds - outdoor bubble fun for all ages with retired Sodus teacher Bette Bugni. Dress appropriately. Thursday, Aug. 12 brings the Red, White and Blue club together from 1 to 2, when 1st through 3rd grades join Mrs. Garland for stories and more. (She says to be sure to bring along your colorful creativity.) That evening, Tales on the Porch for all ages, 7-7:45. Come 'set a spell' on the Sodus Library porch to hear guest speakers spin their tales (both tall and true) of Sodus and New York State. Bring your blankets, chairs and families and prepare to be enlightened.
The outdoor movie at Sodus Point for tomorrow night is Creature from the Black Lagoon. Movies begin at dusk. Take your blankets and sit back and relax to see a movie under the Sodus Point stars. When we come out your way, we always stop by to see the beach. Oscar went for his first walk on the sand. He was a tad confused. The waves coming into the shore were so pretty and it was fun to sit, listen to the waves come to shore and watch the kids try to body surf. This weekend is Sodus Fire Company Field Days, and stop by the Rummage Sale at Sodus Presbyterian Church. This Sunday, the Summer Concert Series at the Sodus Point Lighthouse Museum, is Pangaia Steel Drums at 2 p.m.
Ten-Minute Scallops
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted 1. Preheat the broiler. Coat a large rimmed baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray and set aside. 2. In a small bowl, combine the butter, bread crumbs, parsley, oregano, and garlic; mix well. Sprinkle the scallops with pepper and place on the baking sheet. 3. Spoon the bread crumb mixture evenly over the scallops and broil for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the topping is golden and the scallops are cooked through. Preparation Tip: Watch the scallops carefully, because, in seconds, the broiler can take them from golden to brown to burned. Some fun stories to read with the kids:
Tiny Toes by Donna Jakob Don't forget one for yourself to enjoy. If you like watching Simon Cowell on the American Idol you will love his book: I Don't Mean To Be Rude, But... It's great - tells you all about him growing up and what makes Simon, Simon. Have a great week. Rainy days aren't useless - they are good for sharing stories, movies and having picnics on the living room floor.
