Girl Scouts receive Silver Awards Written by Jennifer Gillette and Ashley Gabbard Clyde-Savannah Girl Scouts, Ashley Gabbard and Jennifer Gillette, of Troop #897, Seven Lakes Council, have completed their Girl Scout Silver Award. The Silver Award is the highest award that a Cadette Girl Scout can earn. It symbolizes accomplishments in Girl Scouting, leadership and community service. To earn the Silver Award, each girl had to earn three Interest Project Patches related to their Silver Award project, the Dreams to Reality Patch about career exploration, the Cadette Girl Scout Leadership Award, consisting of 25 hours of leadership service, and the Cadette Girl Scout Challenge. Each girl was required to complete a minimum of 30 hours on the Silver Award service project that they designed, planned and carried out. Ashley and Jennifer decided to collect new and/or gently used stuffed animals, at an annual Girl Scout Bingo Night, which would then be donated to the local ambulances and hospital. They collected a total of 200 stuffed animals that were carefully and thoughtfully sorted, washed and checked. On Thursday, May 13th, they presented 30 of the collected animals to Clyde Ambulance volunteers Darryl Bailey, Diane Gary, and Dick Muoio. On May 14 they went to Via Health Newark Wayne Community Hospital where they were greeted by hospital staff Carol Hary, Jolene Jackson and Barbara Neumann. They presented them with 140 stuffed animals to be distributed to several departments in the hospital including ER, EKG, surgery, radiology and the lab. On May 18, they presented the remaining 30 stuffed animals to Bob Barton and Jim Younglove, Crew Chief of the Savannah Ambulance group. They donated the stuffed animals for distribution to scared children receiving medical attention in hopes that they would provide them comfort and ease their anxiety. Ashley Gabbard is the daughter of Pam and Tim Gabbard of Clyde, and Jennifer Gillette is the daughter of Linda and Bill Gillette of Savannah. Both are in the 8th grade, and have been Girl Scouts for nine years. They would like to thank all of the people who donated the stuffed animals, and would like to thank the Clyde and Savannah Ambulances and Newark Hospital for accepting the stuffed animals as the final step in earning their Silver Award.
