Historical Society seeks members

The membership drive of the Wayne County Historical Society begins June 15. As part of this year's annual support campaign, campaign chairperson, Jackie Perrin, is placing an emphasis on attracting new members and urging current members to renew their membership for 2005.

Memberships run from January 1 - December 31, but those first-time members who join now receive membership for 2005 and also receive the remainder of 2004 free.

The mission of the Society, which was formed in 1946, is to encourage an appreciation of the history of Wayne County through the collection, preservation, and exhibition of artifacts and to disseminate historical information about Wayne County and the surrounding area.

The Society has been operating the Wayne County Old Jail Museum, a 150 year-old former sheriff's residence and attached county jail, since 1962.

The Society holds annual fund-raising activities such as the September Cemetery Walk, the June Wine Tasting, and the February Starlight Gala, but the major portion of the funds needed for museum operations comes from the membership. The goal this year is to attract 100 new members.

The Society offers several levels of membership: household membership is $25, patron is $50, sustaining and corporate memberships are $100, benefactor is $500, and endowment is $1,000.

Members receive reduced prices for special events, free admission to guided Museum tours, a bi-monthly newsletter, an invitation to the Annual Gala, and free use of the reference library. Funds raised during the campaign will be used to support the operation of the Museum and the Society's many educational programs.

To receive a membership form or more information, call the museum at 946.4943, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
