Missing Sodus News from the Chamber: In an effort to help promote Sodus as a good place to live, work, shop, and visit, the Sodus Chamber of Commerce is again distributing 'Chamber Checks' during the Olde Tyme Country Faire week end July 23 and 24. The 'Chamber Checks' are good for a 10% discount at the participating merchants that will be listed on the back and the 'Chamber Checks' will be valid until the end of the year. The Faire weekend will start on Friday night, July 23, with a Storybook Pet Parade hosted by the Cracker Box Palace, along with an Ice Cream Social and free Street Dance sponsored by Culligan Water. On Saturday, July 24, vendors will be at the WCTA parking lot, the Jason Buyck Memorial 5K run will start from the Methodist Church and the Sodus Firemen will be hosting an Antique and Classic Car show on the Firemen's grounds. Larry Moss started design work on Balloon Manor, a slightly haunted house made entirely from balloons. (Remember how neat the Octopus was floating above Sodus Point last year?) This will be a family friendly 'haunted' house. He has put together an amazing crew so far, with more openings for those interested. His co-lead on this project is Don Caldwell, an incredibly creative artist with a warped mind suitable for a Halloween event. Other designers already confirmed for this project that will each be working on their own room of the house include Royal Sorell, Ralph Dewey, Todd Neufeld and John Holmes. http://www.balloonfunhouse.com/ This is Newarkfest weekend in downtown Newark. There will be arts, crafts, food, entertainment, parade, displays and exhibits. Fun for the entire family! Newark Public Library will hold its Certified 5K race. Race packet pick up begins at 8 a.m. at the library. Refreshments available after the race. Tomorrow (June, 12) there will be an Open House at Cracker Box Palace, 8720 Wayne Center Rd., South Sodus. Tour the Farm and meet the animals; Pony rides, games, photos with your favorite animal and refreshments. $2 per person & kids under 8 are free
Corn Grilled in the Husk with Roasted Red Bell Pepper Butter
It is a popular misconception that corn must be soaked in water or wrapped in foil before being cooked on the grill. All you need to do is peel off the excess huskage (leaving the cob with 2 or 3 layers of husk still intact) and yank off the silk. Then simply place the corn on the hottest part of the grill and turn 1/4 rotation every 2 to 3 minutes, as the husk starts to blacken. When the entire husk begins to resemble blackened carbon, remove from grill. Peel away blackened husk and serve with Red Bell Pepper Butter. F.Y.I., the heat of the grill causes the natural sugars in the corn to caramelize and some of the kernels to turn brown. The more browning, the sweeter the corn. Roasted Red Bell Pepper Butter:
Roast the red peppers whole over a charcoal flame or under a broiler, turning until entirely blackened. Remove from the grill and immediately place in a paper bag. Seal bag and let sit for 10 minutes. Peel off the charred skin and discard. Slice the peeled peppers open and discard the membranes and seeds. In a food processor, puree the butter, peppers, basil, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Divide butter into 4 equal amounts, place each portion on tin foil, waxed paper or plastic wrap, then roll into a butter log, approximately 1 1/4-inches in diameter. Return to refrigerator until butter hardens. To serve, remove from foil, and slice into 1/4- inch slices. Flavored butter may be kept refrigerated for up to 1 week or frozen for 1 month. It is excellent on burgers, veal chops, steaks, baked potatoes, or on toasted crusty bread. Don't forget we have men and women in the Middle East who would love to hear from you. Jake Spencer from Marion is someone you could send a note to. He is back in Kuwait Have a great weekend and get ready for the kids' summer vacation. You can pick up work books at the store, books for storytimes. Coloring sheets and story times work for the younger kids and, for the older ones, a time to read on their own, TV time, activity time, maybe a creative writing time. Ask the kids' teachers - they'll have ideas for you as well. Have a good week. Any events or ideas you have, please send them along to me at mgoodcooke@yahoo.com
