Well, summer vacation has officially begun. Mark your calendars and get your lawn chairs cleaned up.

The concerts at the Point will begin on July 4th. Head to the old Sodus Point Lighthouse Sundays. Bring outdoor seating and enjoy an afternoon of music lakeside. The Lighthouse Museum, located at 7606 Ontario St., Sodus Point, is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free; donations graciously accepted.

The concerts are really a nice relaxing way to spend a couple of hours on a sunny summer afternoon. There is a nice mix of different types of music to please everyone.

Later in July, the Outdoor Movies start at Oscar Fuerst Field in downtown Sodus Point (on the north side of Greig Street). July 17: Spiderman.

You can still pick your own strawberries at Burnap's Farm Market. Open daily: Monday-Friday 8 to 8; Saturday-Sunday 8 to 4.

News from the Sodus Chamber: The Chamber is coordinating a township wide yard sale during their OLDE TYME COUNTRY FAIRE on July 24. There is going to be the Sodus Firemen's Antique Car Show, the Jason Buyck Memorial 5k run, open house at the Wallington Cobblestone School and the faire at the WCTA parking lot, plus a the outdoor movie at Sodus Point in the evening. Anyone in the Sodus township may participate by sending their name, address and a check for $10 (to help with the advertising and printing costs) to the Sodus Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 187, Sodus, NY 14551. Your yard sale kit will contain a sign, bright tape to put on mailbox, and list of participants with maps will be mailed to you. Deadline for being included is July 9.

If you have problems with poison ivy in your yard or garden, there is a spray designed just for killing it. (I got mine at Chase Pitkin but I'm sure any gardening center will have it.) I have battled with and tried to work around poison ivy for a while and then last year got it by raking in the spring. You don't need to see the plant to get the poison ivy rash - just touching the dirt or anything like leaves surrounding it can do it. The spray comes in a small spray bottle and is about $5. You can get a larger one if needed. Unfortunately, plants that are intertwined with the poison ivy vine will probably die as well, but there is no choice. It is very hard to get rid of and quite hardy. Now, mine is gone after using the spray a couple of times (though I am still careful in the garden....the Poison Ivy rash memory is a tough one to forget). Also, the Benadryl lotion (it's like a gel) is great for relieving the itching of mosquito bites.

Philadelphia Cheese Steak Sandwich (Source: Better Homes and Gardens)

1 12-ounce boneless beef rib eye steak
2 tablespoons margarine or butter
2 medium onions, thinly sliced and separated into rings
1 medium red or green sweet pepper, cut into thin strips
4 French rolls or hoagie buns, split
4 ounces thinly sliced cheddar cheese

Directions

1. Partially freeze beef. Thinly slice beef across the grain into bite-size strips. In a 10-inch skillet melt margarine or butter; add onions and pepper. Cover and cook over medium-low heat about 10 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally.

2. Remove onion-pepper mixture from skillet with a slotted spoon. If necessary, add additional margarine to skillet. Add beef; cook and stir over medium-high heat for 2 to 3 minutes or until done.

3. To serve, spread rolls open face on a baking sheet. Divide beef and onion- pepper mixture among rolls. Top with cheese. Broil 4 to 5 inches from the heat for 1 to 2 minutes or until cheese is melted. Serve immediately. Makes 4 servings.

Oscar and Sarah are enjoying their walks at night. Sarah has taken on the mothering role for him. (For awhile, I wasn't sure... she seemed to think he was a great toy or something to eat.)

Enjoy the challenge of keeping the kids busy and entertained for two months. The libraries will be having the summer reading programs, the parks and beach are always a fun way to keep the kids occupied. Also, many kids like the routine or structure of school - having some kind of schedule for the day helps them to know what to look forward to. Many of the stores have workbooks for the kids and, of course, reading is always a good choice. As for lunches, I'm still trying to figure that one out... if you have any ideas, please write to me at

Have a great week and try not to get so busy you miss out on those nice sunny days we've waited so long for.
