Newark brothers in the military Sgt. Ryan John Kuperus, USMC (pictured here in the Philippines), Newark Class of 2000, was promoted from Corporal to the rank of Sergeant on January 1 while stationed in Okinawa, Japan for an eight-month tour of duty. Almost four years to the day, his brother, David Kuperus, Newark High School Class of 2004 will be entering the United States Navy. He starts boot camp on August 19. From there, he will head to Texas for culinary training and on the Groton, CT for submarine training. He has given a five-year commitment to the Navy. In Japan, Sgt. Kuperus along with his platoon spent one month in the Fiji Mountains, training with the Japanese and six weeks in the Philippines, helping fight the war against terrorism. Sgt. Kuperus participated in Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom for the Philippines and numerous other training missions with the Japanese, Dutch and British. His four-year commitment ends in August, but he will be continuing on as an active reservist in the Marine Corps.
