Marion grad studying abroad
She is the granddaughter of Joyce Cantwell from Marion and Clarence and Joanne Lawliss of Palmyra. Her father is Barry Lawliss of Marion. When not in college, she resides with her mother and step-father, Lisa and Thomas Gleason. She spent four months living with a family in the south of France. In her words: I was able to make a few observations. The first thing I noticed was the abundance of bread, cheese and wine, a common stereotype concerning the French culture. There was another stereotype that I did not find to be true. Before I left for France, I was slightly worried that I would run into people who were unfriendly because they did not like Americans. However, I did not find any anti-American sentiment among the many people I met. People were overwhelmingly excited to meet and converse with an American. I lived in Avignon, a walled city famous for its palace formerly inhabited by the Popes. I took classes on grammar, phonetics, current events, France and the European Union, and the history of architecture. The latter class allowed for many excursions to the ancient Roman ruins in the south of France. Outside of class I traveled to Barcelona in northern Spain for a weekend. I spent a week touring Florence and Venice in Italy. My final road trip was to Monaco. I thoroughly enjoyed my time abroad and am very glad I had the opportunity to do so. I will be spending the next four months in Cuba, attending the University of Havana. I am once again excited to embark upon a new adventure which should be quite different from my French experience, another new and exciting learning experience! Lawliss is a third-year student at Gettysburg College and Institute for study abroad. She is on the high honor dean's lest and is a political science and Spanish/Latin American studies major, with a minor in French. After graduation in May 2005, she plans to continue her studies to earn her Master's degree.
