Newark boys upset number one seed

The Newark Reds Varsity boys basketball team will play in the Class A Sectional finals this Sunday after upsetting the number one seeded Batavia Blue Devils 63-60 in semi-final action at the Blue Cross Arena last night.

Greg MacBride The fifth-seeded Reds, who improved to 16-5 on the season, have now won nine straight games heading into the finals. Their opponent will be the Geneva Panthers coached by former Newark Red junior varsity coach Jay Lauer. That g ame will be Sunday at 5:30.

Newark got off to a great start taking a slim 13-12 lead. In the second period, Batavia rallied to take a slim 31-30 halftime lead. In the third period, both ballclubs went back and forth with the Blue Devils taking a 45-40 lead going into the fourth.

Newark started the fourth by scoring the first five points and knotting the game at 45 apiece. The Reds outscored 23-15 in the final period for the win.

 Newark shot extremely well in the game, going 7 of 14 from the three point line. Newark's Mychal Wilkes finished the game with 17 points. Teammates Scott Smith and Greg MacBride (pictured) scored 13 apiece with Andre Sanon added 12 points.
